Too hot to handle. Too cold to hold.
Granada Hills Charter (19-4, 5-0) was in charge from the onset, jumping out to a commanding 16-3 lead early on in the first quarter as El Camino Real (16-8, 4-1) Sr. PG and Long Beach State commit Kianna Hamilton-Fisher picked up three early fouls… all in the opening minutes of the first quarter! It was pretty much a wrap after that. Elco did manage to cut the lead to 18-12 during a 9-2 run but Granada Hills answered, going on a 7-0 run of their own to close the first quarter up 25-12. It appears as though GHC may have a bit more depth and skilled, seasoned players who all contribute by putting points on the board and play an overall solid game by limiting their mental mistakes.
All while running fantastic sets under head coach Jared Honig.
GHC does a tremendous job of showing patience in their offensive attack, then hitting open players for a catch and shoot or cutters slashing to the rack. They moved the ball around and pulled the bow and arrow to perfection against ECR. You could feel the energy before tip-off, wondering who would come out landing the first blow. It was clear that GHC would come out swinging. The fact that they trap and press for the majority of the game puts a lot of pressure on opposing teams as well. El Camino had a difficult time breaking pressure and making sound decisions with the rock.
Granada Hills up 41-22 at the half.
It was a tough first half for the lady Conquistadors, having a difficult time getting points early on and avoiding foul trouble. The refs were not kind, that’s for sure, as Fisher-Hamilton picked up not one, not two, but three first quarter fouls that limited her ability to make plays, as well as the teams’ overall ability to be special. It was a night when Granada Hills would show too much firepower and overwhelm El Camino – on both ends of the floor. Don’t count The Lady Conquistadors out just yet. The two teams meet again February 9, 2018 for the season finale @ El Camino Real. If both teams continue to win, you can bet your bottom dollar that the ‘joint will be jumpin’, with El Camino eyeing a share for first place in the West Valley League.
