In the first round of the Open Division CIF Southern Section Boy’s basketball playoffs, it was another game that went down to the wire. Inglewood traveled to Alemany to take on the 2016 Mission League Champs. Inglewood was coming in feeling good about themselves, as a win to close out their season against Redondo Union on January 29, 2016 boosted their confidence. Anytime you beat a top 5 team in the state – Redondo Union is currently ranked 4th in the State of Cali – then you know you might have something special. Inglewood rode the momentum of their 5 game winning streak indeed, to stifle Alemany in the second half for the 56-54 win.
Alemany came out to start the game hot as a pepper, nailing 3ptrs from all over the floor and taking the early lead. Shacquille Dawkins was on fire as he drained several three pointers from deep to put fear in the hearts of Inglewoods’ back-court. The supporting cast for Alemany played well but the lack of size really hurt their club down the stretch, as they couldn’t secure several defensive rebounds.
Earnie Sears, a 6’4 Jr. Wing for host Alemany tried his best to not only offer support on the offensive end of the court – but also handle the front court duties and help on the boards against Inglewood and their bigs. Size down the stretch certainly hurt Alemany, who couldn’t control several defensive rebounds as Inglewood was able to capitalize on 2nd chance points.
Inglewood now has the task of upsetting the #1 ranked team in the nation – Chino Hills. The good thing is that Inglewood will be playing at home in front of their crowd and family which came out and supported their club against Alemany so look for a raucous crowd when Chino Hills visits The Wood. Unfortunatley home court advantage will only go so far.
Look for Chino Hills to establish control of the game and come away with the W. The Ball Brothers and Co. should come in firing on all cylinders to establish themselves as the favorite to win not only the Open Division Crown but the State Championship as well. We got some good games ahead of us.
